Emperor Scorpion- Pandinus imperator

Size- Emperor scorpions are the largest scorpions in the world and are 6.5-8 inches long.

Life span- 5-8 years.

Diet- Insects, spiders, mice and lizards.

Geographic range- They are native to western Africa.

Habitat- Tropical rainforests

Reproduction- Emperor scorpions are viviparous which means they give birth to live young after a gestation of 7-9 months. They have 10-35 babies that are born white in color and ride around on their mother's back until they can protect themselves from predators. They will get darker in color after each molt.

Special adaptations- They have a large stinger and venom sack at the base of their tail. However, they capture most of their prey with their pedipalps (front pinchers). Their sting has been likened to a wasp or bee sting and is only problematic for those with allergies. Their body hairs are used to detect air and ground vibrations.

Behavior- They are nocturnal and burrow under rocks, logs and tree roots. They are ambush predators, so they lay in wait for their prey. They are fairly docile by nature and have become very popular in the pet trade.

Current status- Emperor Scorpions are threatened, Cites Appendix II, due to over-collection for the demanding pet trade.
