Reproduction- Females lay up to 4 eggs in nests within tree cavities, particularly of the huge baobab trees. The incubation period is one month and the babies are born altricial which means they are completely dependant on their parents as they are born featherless and with their ears and eyes closed.
Special adaptations- Like all parrots, Senegals have zygodactyl toe formation which means they have two toes in front of their foot and two toes in back. This allows them to grip and climb more effectively and also hold their food with their feet.
Behavior- Senegals forage for food in pairs or small flocks of up to twenty. They are extremely acrobatic, inquisitive and learn human speech easily.
Current status- Senegal parrots are threatened species, Cites Appendix II, due to habitat destruction and
the illegal pet trade. |
